New Appointments

We are delighted to announce several new appointments to key roles within the Bernoulli Society. Vladas Pipiras (University of North Carolina, USA) is the new Publications Secretary, succeeding Mark Podolskij; Xingqiu Zhao (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China) has become the new Chair of the East-Asian and Pacific Regional Committee, taking over from Ajay Jasra; Veronica Vinciotti (University of Trento, Italy) has been appointed as the new Chair of the Committee on Network Science, succeeding Gesine Reinert; and Almut Veraart (Imperial College London, UK) has succeeded Gesine Reinert as the Editor of SpringerBriefs in Probability and Mathematical Statistics. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the outgoing officers for their invaluable contributions and wish the newly appointed members every success in their new roles.

Ethel Newbold Prize – Call for Nominations

The Bernoulli Society's Newbold Prize Committee invites nominations for the 2027 Ethel Newbold Prize. Established in 2014, this biennial prize honours the significant contributions of women to the field of statistics. The award, generously supported by Wiley, recognises excellence in statistics without regard to the gender of the recipient. The prize will only be awarded if the set of nominations includes candidates of both genders. Nominations should include a letter outlining the nominee's achievements and contributions and a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee. Willem van Zwet Medal – Call for Nominations

A call for nominations for the Willem van Zwet Medal is now open. This biennial Bernoulli Society Medal aims to recognise special service to the Bernoulli Society. The Medal is in honour of Willem van Zwet, who served the Bernoulli Society and its aims in many special ways. The previous awardees were Maria Eulalia Vares (2021), Thomas Mikosch (2023) and Herold Dehling (2025). Nominations should be sent by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science 2026

The 5th annual International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science will take place virtually on October 6, 2026. This free, 24-hour global conference celebrates the contributions of women to statistics and data science and connects statisticians, data scientists, researchers, educators, professionals, and students from around the world. This year's theme is Creating Global Connections. Registration is now open and free of charge until September 28, 2026. Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics – Recipients

The international jury appointed by the King Baudouin Foundation has selected the topic The R Project as the recipient of the 2026 Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics. The distinction goes to the five members of the R Core Team who, according to the jury, have made the longest and most sustained contributions: Brian Ripley, Martin Maechler, Kurt Hornik, Peter Dalgaard, and Luke Tierney. Sad News

It is with great sadness that we learned of the deaths of Professor Arak M. Mathai, Professor Emeritus at McGill University, who passed away on December 20, 2025; Professor Paul Deheuvels, who passed away on January 30, 2026; and Professor Agnes M. Herzberg, Professor Emerita at Queen's University, who passed away on June 2, 2026. The Bernoulli Society extends its sincere condolences to their families.

The School of Basic Sciences at EPFL invites applications for a faculty position in Mathematics of Learning. New Appointments

We are delighted to announce two new appointments. Airam Blancas (Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico, Mexico) has joined the Bernoulli Young Researchers Committee, succeeding Andressa Cerqueira, and José Alexander Ramírez (University of Costa Rica, Costa Rica) has become the new Chair of the Latin America Regional Committee, succeeding Inés Armendáriz. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the outgoing officers for their invaluable contributions and wish the newly appointed members every success in their new roles.

EMS 2026 in Lugano and General Assembly

The European Meeting of Statisticians in Lugano is approaching (August 24–28, 2026), and we are very excited about it! We remind all members that the Bernoulli Society General Assembly will take place during the conference on Monday, August 24. Have a look at the full program here.

ISI World Statistics Congress 2027 – Call for Invited Paper Session Proposal

The Scientific Program Committee of the ISI World Statistics Congress 2027 taking place in Lusaka, Zambia, from July 11-15, 2027, is currently inviting proposals for Invited Paper Sessions (IPS). This is an excellent opportunity to showcase recent developments and emerging topics in probability, statistics, and data science to an international audience. We strongly encourage Bernoulli Society members to submit short proposals indicating the title and the names of tentative speakers. Further information on the IPS format, submission guidelines, and proposal process can be found here. Please select “Bernoulli Society” in the Associations/Committees tab when submitting a proposal. The deadline for IPS submissions is June 16, 2026.

Highlights from CLAPEM 2026

The 17th edition of the Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CLAPEM) took place in Montevideo, Uruguay, in March 2026. On this occasion, the courses were taught by Gersende Fort and Daniel Kious on the topics Stochastic Approximation beyond Gradient for Machine Learning: Taming Noise with Guarantees and Random Walks in Dynamic Random Environments, respectively. The plenary speakers were Alejandro Cholaquidis, Liliana Forzani, Davide Gabrielli, Nicolás García Trillos, Alexander Glazman, Adrián González Casanova, Kavita Ramanan, Cynthia Rush, and Avelio Sepúlveda. The conference featured 10 invited sessions, 23 contributed sessions, 10 contributed talk sessions, and 2 poster sessions. More than 300 participants attended the event. The Aranda–Ordaz Prizes for the best theses in Probability and Statistics were announced at the conference. The winners were Israel Emmanuel Ambriz Lobato in Statistics and Marcelo Campos in Probability. Special mentions were awarded to Magno Tairone de Freitas Severino (Statistics) and José de Jesús Contreras Arredondo and Lucas Roberto de Lima (Probability). Special Issue: Celebrating 140 Years of the International Statistical Institute

The Revista Colombiana de Estadística (RCE) announces a special issue entitled Celebrating 140 Years of the International Statistical Institute – Advances in Theory and Applications. This special issue is organized in cooperation with the ISI Outreach Committee for Latin America and the Caribbean and the ISI Young Statisticians Committee, and includes the participation of guest editors representing the Bernoulli Society. It aims to highlight recent advances in both theoretical and applied statistics, with particular emphasis on contributions that reflect the diversity and impact of the global statistical community. Submissions are welcome from researchers worldwide, including contributions connected to the Bernoulli Society community, until June 20, 2026. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: statistical modeling and inference, probability, stochastic processes, spatial and temporal statistics, Bayesian methods, and interdisciplinary applications. New Researcher Award in Mathematical Statistics – Call for Applications

The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the 2027 New Researcher Award. Eligible candidates are active researchers in Mathematical Statistics who obtained the PhD degree on or after June 30, 2021, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. An extension may be given to those having had disruptions after receiving the PhD, such as parenthood. Diversity among the awardees is one of the Society’s goals, and therefore women and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. The Bernoulli Society, as a co-sponsor of the conference, warmly encourages everyone to participate in the 4th Joint Conference on Statistics and Data Science, which will take place in July 2026 in Guiyang, China. Jointly organized by the Chinese Association for Applied Statistics, Probability and Statistics Society of China, Association for Industrial Statistics Teaching, Business Statistics Society of China, China Medical Association’s Biostatistics Division and IMS-China, since its inaugural meeting in 2023, JCSDS has become one of the world’s largest gatherings in statistics and data science. JCSDS 2026 will be staged together with the IMS-China biannual meeting with special sessions dedicated to former IMS President Late Professor Peter Hall to mark his 10-year passing from us. New Appointments

Po-Ling Loh (University of Cambridge, UK) has succeeded Sebastian Engelke as the Membership Secretary, Claudia Kirch (Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany) has taken on the role of Treasurer, succeeding Johan Segers, and Rongfeng Sun (NUS, Singapore) has become the new Chair of the Conferences on Stochastic Processes, taking over from Panki Kim. We extend our heartfelt thanks to all outgoing officers for their invaluable contributions and wish the newly appointed members every success in their roles!

Nominations for the Latin American Regional Committee/SLAPEM

According to the statutes of the Latin American Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society and the Latin American Society of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (SLAPEM), four of the eight members of the committee will step down in April 2026. The current committee members nominate the following candidates for renewal:

  • Natalia Cardona (Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Colombia)
  • Pablo Ferrari (Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina)
  • Sergio López (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico)
  • Santiago Saglietti (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile)

As the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacant places, all candidates shall be considered elected. The new members’ term shall begin on April 1, 2026, for a period of four years.

Special Issue in Memory of Ole E. Barndorff-Nielsen

David G. Kendall Award for Young Researchers – Recipients

Wolfgang Doeblin Prize – Extension of the Call for Nominations

The Bernoulli Society announces that the deadline for nominations for the 2026 Wolfgang Doeblin Prize has been extended. Nominations will now be accepted until February 28, 2026. The Wolfgang Doeblin Prize, which was founded in 2011 and is generously sponsored by Springer, is awarded biannually to a single individual who is in the beginning of his or her mathematical career, for outstanding research in the field of probability theory. Jean-Pierre Demailly Prize for Open Science in Mathematics – Call for Applications

The French learned societies of mathematics (SMF), applied and industrial mathematics (SMAI), and statistics (SFdS), together with the Epijournal de Géométrie Algébrique, are launching the second edition of the Jean-Pierre Demailly Prize for Open Science in Mathematics, named after the algebraic geometrician Jean-Pierre Demailly. Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics – Call for Nominations

Nominations are open for the 2026 Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics, awarded by the King Baudouin Foundation, Belgium. The prize is named after its sponsor, the statistician Peter J. Rousseeuw. Sad News

The Bernoulli Society was saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Volker Mammitzsch on September 23, 2025, and of Professor Klaus Krickeberg on November 27, 2025.

Professor Mammitzsch served as Membership Secretary of the Society from 1994 to 2007 and contributed significantly to the organisation of major scientific meetings, including the 16th European Meeting of Statisticians held in Marburg in 1984.

Professor Krickeberg served as President of the Society from 1977 to 1979 and played a crucial role in its international development, contributing to the establishment of regional committees in Latin America and East Asia and leading the organisation of the first Bernoulli Society World Congress in Tashkent in 1986.

Our Society mourns the loss of two distinguished members who made lasting contributions to its growth and international reach. Our sincere condolences go to their families, friends, and colleagues.

Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics 2026

The 17th Latin American Congress of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (CLAPEM) will be held in March 2026, in Montevideo, Uruguay. The congress, promoted by the Latin American Society of Probability and Mathematical Statistics (SLAPEM) and the Latin American Regional Committee of the Bernoulli Society, is the main event in these fields in the region. It occurs every two/three years and attracts researchers and students from the most important Latin American centers. New Researcher Award in Mathematical Statistics – Call for Applications

The Bernoulli Society welcomes applications to the 2027 New Researcher Award. Eligible candidates are active researchers in Mathematical Statistics who obtained the PhD degree on or after June 30, 2021, and who are regular members of the Bernoulli Society. An extension may be given to those having had disruptions after receiving the PhD, such as parenthood. Diversity among the awardees is one of the Society's goals, and therefore women and members of under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Willem van Zwet Medal – Call for Nominations

A call for nominations for the Willem van Zwet Medal is now open. This biennial Bernoulli Society Medal aims to recognise special service to the Bernoulli Society. The Medal is in honour of Willem van Zwet, who served the Bernoulli Society and its aims in many special ways. Transfer of the Bernoulli Book and New Appointments

During the General Assembly on July 14, 2025, Victor M. Panaretos formally handed over the presidency. The Bernoulli Book, symbolizing the presidency, was presented to Nancy Reid, who officially assumed the position of President of the Bernoulli Society for the years 2025–2027.

Maria-Eulalia Vares (University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) became the new President-Elect (2025–2027), and six Ordinary Council Members (2025–2029) were introduced: Heather Battey (Imperial College London, UK), Jian Ding (Peking University, China), Florencia Leonardi (Universidade de São Paulo, Brazil), Victor Rivero (CIMAT, Mexico), Amandine Veber (Université Paris Cité, France), and Johanna Ziegel (ETH Zurich, Switzerland).

We extend our sincere thanks to past President Victor M. Panaretos for his dedicated leadership and service to the Society in recent years.

President-Elect and Council Members – Call for Nominations

At the General Assembly of the Bernoulli Society, held on July 14, 2025, a Nominating Committee was established. It consists of: Maria-Eulalia Vares, Nancy Reid, Mark Podolskij, Corina Constantinescu, Panki Kim, Matthias Faes, Gesine Reinert, Małgorzata Bogdan, Ajay Jasra, Inés Armendáriz, Jeff Yao (non-voting). The task of the Committee is to make nominations for the office of President-Elect (2027–2029) and six Ordinary Council Members (2027–2031). Aranda-Ordaz Prize for Best Theses in Probability and Statistics – Call for Nominations

The Francisco Aranda-Ordaz Award is bestowed on one thesis in probability and one thesis in statistics written by students who completed their PhD at a Latin American institution, or in a joint program with a Latin American institution. Theses defended during the period of March 2023 to September 2025 are eligible for consideration in this edition of the Award. Awardees will be invited to attend the XVII CLAPEM to be held in Montevideo, Uruguay, March 2–6, 2026, to present their work in a Special Invited Session. Postdoc Position in Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes – São Paulo State

The Stochastic Systems Modeling project in São Paulo state is recruiting one post-doctoral research fellows in the fields of Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes. The project is spread across four universities (USP, UNICAMP, UFSCar, UFABC) and the main research lines include percolation and interacting random walks, population dynamics and genetic models, information propagation models, characterizers in dynamical systems and inference, and modeling and inference in complex systems.
