This international workshop was a satellite of the 24th European Meeting of Statisticians (Prague, 19–23 August 2002), and was organised jointly by the Department of Probability and Statistics, Charles University in Prague; the Department of Applied Mathematics, Masaryk University in Brno; the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists; and the Taylor Nelson Sofres Factum company.
It focused on recent results in statistical inference, and included many interesting talks presented by outstanding specialists in the area. A large number of the invited talks at the workshop was published in the special issue of Austrian Journal of Statistics 32 (2003), as follows.
> Chakraborty, B and Chaudhuri, P, On the use of genetic algorithm with elitism in robust and non-parametric multivariate analysis;
> Deheuvels, P and Derzko, G, Exact laws for sums of uniform spacings;
> Greenwood, P E, Müller, U U, Ward, L M and Wefelmeyer, W, Statistical analysis of stochastic resonance in a thresholded detector;
> van Es, A J, Klaassen, C A J and Mnatsakanov, R M, Estimating the structural distribution of cell probabilities;
> Kagan, A M, Statistical approach to some mathematical problems;
> Artiles, L M and Levit, B Y, Adaptive regression on the real line in classes of smooth functions;
> Mason, D M, Representations for estimators of integral functionals of the density function;
> Ng, S-K and McLachlan, G, On some variants of the EM algorithm for the fitting of finite mixture models; and
> Sen, P K, Jurecková, J and Picek, J, Goodness-of-fit tests of Shapiro-Wilk type with nuisance regression and scale.

We cordially thank all speakers and participants for participating and making the program so interesting; they did not change their plans even when central Europe was overwhelmed by heavy flooding during the week of the workshop.

An article in the previous issue of Bernoulli News described the devastating floods which, among many other tragedies, destroyed the Charles University Mathematics and Physics Faculty Library. It is incredible to learn that during the workshop described in the above report, there was no electricity available in many of the organisers’ offices (a deprivation which continued through to October 2002), among many other inconveniences and impediments.
An appeal to help restore the library was also announced in the previous issue of Bernoulli News. Please recall that you can donate by sending a personal cheque in favour of “Charles University” to the following address.

Would you like to write a short article about activities in mathematical statistics and probability which are going on in your department? You could mention research, teaching programs, staff profiles (including young statisticians and probabilists), and any other events of interest. A mere 1000 words would be enough, 2000 words would be plenty! You will find Bernoulli News, while very discerning, has the least depressing rejection rate of any journal to which you have sent an article! Please don’t forget to provide pictures, preferably in high-resolution JPEG format. Spread the news to your colleagues around the world of the exciting work your group is doing! Do contact the Editor if you are interested in this. The deadline for the next issue of Bernoulli News is 15 October 2003.
