For some time now the International Statistical Institute (ISI) has been exploring the possibility of publishing its journals online, via Project Euclid. (See projecteuclid.org/.) The Bernoulli Society has been kept well informed of the ISI's deliberations, and, after input from our Publications Committee, and discussion by our Executive, we have endorsed the following option for online publication of our flagship journal, Bernoulli:
“Project Euclid will list the journal and take 30% of fees they generate, but in addition the Bernoulli Society will offer print subscriptions and provide free access to Bernoulli for members and print subscribers.”
As yet there is no timetable for establishing the online version of Bernoulli.
Our newsletter, Bernoulli News, in which you are reading this, is currently offered in hardcopy form and also online, via the web address of its Editor, Rodney Wolff. We do not anticipate any change to this in the near future. At some time, Bernoulli News will become online only, and its print version will cease to appear. However, no date has been set for taking this step, and we would not take the step without consulting with you, our members. A survey of our membership a few years ago indicated that many of you are not yet comfortable with such a move.
The Society often investigates new projects for publication, and it is likely that in the future we shall become further involved in online dissemination of scientific knowledge. When it appears likely that a project will proceed beyond the discussion stage, we shall make sure our members are well informed.
