Victor M. Panaretos, Editor of Bernoulli News |
Dear friends, colleagues and readers of Bernoulli News,
It is with pleasure and a sense of responsibility that I accepted Ed Waymire’s
and Victor Perez-Abreu’s invitation to become editor of Bernoulli News. It is
always a challenging task to edit a journal, and a scientific newsletter has
particular challenges of its own. During my term as editor, I will do my best to
maintain the status of Bernoulli News as the prime source of information and
news items related to the activities of the Society and its Members, and also to
try to expand published material to include pieces and opinion columns on topics
of special interest.
One particular goal on which I would like to place special emphasis is
increasing the attractiveness of Bernoulli News for early career (or young
as they are often referred to) statisticians and probabilists. A key mission of
a society such as ours is to attract and retain talented young researchers in
our discipline. On the one hand, the Bernoulli Society can benefit from their
willingness to adapt to new technologies, fresh outlooks, drive, enthusiasm,
ambition and sense of idealism. At the same time, the Bernoulli Society has much
to offer in the way of exposure, networking, participation, recognition and
access to resources. And, as the main bulletin of our Society, Bernoulli News
has the potential to be an ideal medium to reach out to early career
statisticians and probabilists and to encourage their active participation in
the society.
I would therefore like to encourage our members - and
not only - to consider submitting information about funding opportunities, early
career positions and activities that are of interest to the “young” members of
our societies. I would also welcome the submission of articles related to topics
of high interest for early career statisticians and probabilists (e.g., career
advice, mentoring articles, etc.). Any further ideas are more than welcome!
Finally, I would like to thank our past editors, Vicky Fasen and Robert Stelzer,
for their great work and I count on your support to make Bernoulli News an
indispensable companion to our members!
