Ethel Newbold Prize – Call for Nominations
The Bernoulli Society's Newbold Prize Committee invites nominations for the 2027 Ethel Newbold Prize. Established in 2014, this biennial prize honours the significant contributions of women to the field of statistics. The award, generously supported by Wiley, recognises excellence in statistics without regard to the gender of the recipient. The prize will only be awarded if the set of nominations includes candidates of both genders. Nominations should include a letter outlining the nominee's achievements and contributions and a recent curriculum vitae of the nominee. In order to nominate someone, please send your nomination and any inquiries to Richard Nickl at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2026. The winner will be announced in early 2027. For more details, please visit the webpage here.
Willem van Zwet Medal – Call for Nominations
A call for nominations for the Willem van Zwet Medal is now open. This biennial Bernoulli Society Medal aims to recognise special service to the Bernoulli Society. The Medal is in honour of Willem van Zwet, who served the Bernoulli Society and its aims in many special ways. The previous awardees were Maria Eulalia Vares (2021), Thomas Mikosch (2023) and Herold Dehling (2025). Nominations should be sent by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and should be signed by two members of the Bernoulli Society. The deadline for submissions of nominations is September 30, 2026. For more details, both of eligibility for the award and of what is needed for the nomination, please visit the webpage here.
International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science 2026
The 5th annual International Day of Women in Statistics and Data Science will take place virtually on October 6, 2026. This free, 24-hour global conference celebrates the contributions of women to statistics and data science and connects statisticians, data scientists, researchers, educators, professionals, and students from around the world. This year's theme is Creating Global Connections. Registration is now open and free of charge until September 28, 2026. We encourage Bernoulli Society members to help spread the word about IDWSDS 2026. For more details, please visit the webpage here.
Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics – Recipients
The international jury appointed by the King Baudouin Foundation has selected the topic The R Project as the recipient of the 2026 Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics. The distinction goes to the five members of the R Core Team who, according to the jury, have made the longest and most sustained contributions: Brian Ripley, Martin Maechler, Kurt Hornik, Peter Dalgaard, and Luke Tierney. More details about this award can be found here.
Sad News
It is with great sadness that we learned of the deaths of Professor Arak M. Mathai, Professor Emeritus at McGill University, who passed away on December 20, 2025; Professor Paul Deheuvels, who passed away on January 30, 2026; and Professor Agnes M. Herzberg, Professor Emerita at Queen's University, who passed away on June 2, 2026. The Bernoulli Society extends its sincere condolences to their families.
Warning: Phishing Attempt
In the last months a phishing attempt is underway, targeting members of our Society. The author poses as the Society's president or a Society's officer, and asks for urgent help and/or a wire transfer. Please ignore/delete any such emails. More generally, if you are ever doubtful about the authenticity of an email appearing to originate from a Bernoulli Society officer, please do not hesitate to double-check with the specific officer directly but using the email in their official webpage (not responding to the suspicious email).
