Statement of the SLAPEM General Assembly

The members of the Latin American Society of Probability and Mathematical Statistics, gathered at the General Assembly held on December 5, 2019 in the City of Mérida-Yucatán, Mexico, wish to express our deep repudiation of the growing violence against the native populations of Latin America and the multiple and systematic violations of human rights, at the hands of state agents, organized crime groups and paramilitary forces. We also wish to express concern for the irresponsible management and exploitation of natural resources, and the neglect of the environment carried out by companies and large corporations, with the approval of governments in many cases. Similarly, we are alarmed at the general devaluation of education and scientific thinking, manifest in increasing budget cuts to the funding of these crucial areas for the sustainable development of humanity.
